The Rough Trade store is located in a former 15,000 square foot repurposed film prop warehouse.  The program developed with the client called for a total retail music experience. To achieve this goal the team compartmentalized the various programs and determined early on that the whole facility would be made of reclaimed shipping containers. A matrix was developed locating store uses and music venue uses – containers were assigned and programmed to facilitate and therefore be adapted to the specific uses. The large sales floor is dotted with ancillary functions including containers for the café, gallery, lounge, book sales, and electronic sales. At the back of the space large doors and a wall of containers lead to a large music venue with containers services at the sound booth, the bars, bathrooms, and branding spaces.
