Galapagos Art Space was offered the old horse stables at 16 Main Street for the purpose of serving as a magnet for the growing DUMBO arts district. A diverse program including music, spoken word, cabaret and more all take the stage. The upper floor contain a Kunsthalle gallery – a space for rotating site specific installations. The ground floor garage space, formally for horse-drawn carts, has been appropriated as the main performance hall with accompanying bar and support spaces. The floor of the venue is a 6” recirculating pool with metal plinths of seating and pathways. The visual spectacle of reflection and light energize the room and the pools constant temperature assists in thermal treatment. A reinforced concrete wall and mezzanine were mathematically oriented to the stage with subtle angles for acoustics. Materials and finishes were kept simple and free of VOC’s. The project was energy modeled so as to optimize heating and cooling system design.
